Jihlava

Jihlava is located in the centre of the Czech Republic, close to the motorway linking Prague and Brno to the east. The city has a population of 50,800 inhabitants (2007) and is a capital of the hilly region Vysocina (NUTS-3 level), which is rather peripheral and sparsely populated. The clean and calm surroundings are benefits of the city.

Jihlava has a large historical town centre from the era of a medieval silver mining. The traditional textile industry almost disappeared, but the fine engineering, supplying the automotive industry, has been a largely dominating employer in the city now.

Jihlava is a pleasant city attracting tourism by Gustav Mahler, a music composer who was native here. Other sights are uniquely preserved towns Telc and Trebíc, or the Santini’s church in Zelená Hora, all listed by UNESCO. Jihlava organises an international festival of documentary films annually.
