Kladno

Kladno is located in centre of the Czech Republic, just 20 km northwest of Prague. The city has a population of 69,700 inhabitants (2007) and is the largest city of the region Stredoceský kraj (NUTS-3 level), which surrounds Prague. However, Kladno is not a capital of this region.

The city lost most of its heavy industry tradition in the 1990’s, namely the coal mining. Also the metallurgy collapsed and has recovered only partly now, leaving behind large brownfields. Kladno became a commuting satellite of Prague, many people found jobs at the Prague’s airport and distribution centres.

The city of Kladno maintained a strong role of services (health and educational sector). Although it does not attract many visitors, the town is a surprisingly pleasant complex of housing estates surrounded by wooded country.
