Pardubice

Pardubice is located some 90 km east of Prague and only 20 km south of the twin city Hradec Králové. It lies on the river of Labe (Elbe) in fertile lowland. The population of Pardubice is 89,200 (2007). The city is a capital of the NUTS-3 region (Pardubický kraj), which is rather hilly and very scenic to the south. The city itself has a remarkable historical centre with a castle.

Pardubice developed as a strong industrial centre on the key transportation axis from Prague eastwards. The heritage of the past is a vast chemical industry – e.g. an oil refinery or production of explosives. However, the largest employer in the city is a producer of computers now, along with a number of automotive suppliers, and Pardubice is becoming a centre of R&D. The city organises the most renowned horse races in the country.
