Liberec

Liberec is located in the north of the western part of the Czech Republic, called Bohemia, very close to the border with Germany and Poland. Liberec’s urban structure is complicated by very hilly terrain. The city is very popular being immediately surrounded by mountains with many ski resorts. The mountain Jested to the south (1012 m) with a famous tower is the most distinctive landmark of the city. Liberec is inhabited by 99,700 people (2007) and is a capital of the NUTS-3 region (Liberecký kraj). Another city of Jablonec nad Nisou (44,800 people), renowned by the jewellery industry, is almost connected with Liberec.

Liberec itself has a strong industrial tradition, linked to engineering and textile production, including technical university. The city has succeeded in conversion to hi-tech industries lately, e.g. in nanotechnology research and special fibres production. Strong position also gained numerous automotive industry suppliers and plastics producers.
