Ustí nad Labem

The city of Ústí nad Labem lies 90km north of Prague and is located deep in the valley of the Labe (Elbe) river. The city has a population of 95,000 people. The city benefits from the Prague-Germany motorway which is near completion, in addition to major river port and railway junctions. Ústí nad Labem is home to a long established chemical industry and has suffered from a number of serious environmental problems, although these have now been improved. The city’s difficult topography and proximity to opencast mining and power plants has contributed to the problem. A variety of food, glass and engineering industries are also present, but the region as a whole suffers from the highest unemployment in the country. Ústí nad Labem is the capital of the Ústecký kraj region. The Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, includes the city and a limited part of the region, accounting for 244,000 people over an area of 874km2.
