Plzen

Plzen is the fourth largest Czech city, with a population of 166,000, and is located west of Prague. The city benefits from a high quality motorway connection to the capital and to the German border, only 70km away. Plzen is home to the well-known beer Pilsner, to which it gives its name. The food and beverage industries are of great importance, although heavy engineering is still the dominant employer in the city. Decreases in heavy industry have been successfully compensated by many green-field developments in the 1990s, namely electronics and automotive supplier plants. Plzen is the capital of the Plzenský kraj region. The Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, includes Plzen and a small part of the region, covering 353,000 people over an area of 3,103km2.
