Ostrava

Ostrava lies in the far north east of the Czech Republic, close to the mountainous border with Slovakia. Ostrava is the third largest city in the country with 317,000 inhabitants, however it is the second largest urban agglomeration after Prague. Ostrava is famous for its coal and steel; this “steel heart” of the country was developed mainly under Communism. Problems of this heritage are only partly resolved, privatisation of huge state companies is unfinished and the region suffers from high unemployment. The industrial sector still dominates the city, accounting for 52% of all jobs, and includes chemicals and engineering. The Ostrava region still suffers from lacking motorway links to the rest of the country, however it does remain one of the most economically significant regions of the Czech Republic. Ostrava is the capital of Moravskoslezský kraj, the Moravian-Silesian region. The Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of Ostrava, as defined by the Urban Audit, includes the city and an extensive part of this region, covering 1.1 million people over an area of 3,896km2.
