Brno

The second largest city of the Czech Republic, with 376,000 inhabitants, is located in the south east of the Czech Republic, in the region of Moravia. Brno is the centre of the main national agricultural and wine-producing region for the country and the city is well connected with Prague by motorway. The city’s favourable location and proximity to Austria has helped the process of industrialization and the development of leading textile and engineering industries, up until now tractor and armament plants. Restructuralisation during the 1990s was eased by the expansion of the service sector with many green-field developments. Brno is also well-known for its distinctive cultural establishments and trade fairs. Brno is a capital of the Jihomoravský kraj, the South Moravian region. The Larger Urban Zone (LUZ), as defined by the Urban Audit, includes the city and a smaller part of this region, covering 730,000 people over an area of 3,170km2.
