Varna

Varna is the regional centre of the Varna region and has a population of 312,889 (2001). The city is subdivided into five districts with district administrations and mayors, elected by the Municipal Council. Varna is a large sea port and is connected into the country's road transport network, fostering excellent domestic and international transport connections. The service sector is the predominant economic driver in Varna, and the city has a well-established tourist industry. There are over 40,000 available beds in the resort complexes located in and around Varna, representing one third of the country's hotel facilities. Varna boasts a rich cultural heritage, and is the host to a number of international festivals and sports events. The city also has five higher educational establishments and a number of scientific research institutes. Varna is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) covering a population of 360,396.
