Plovdiv

Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria. Located in one of the most densely populated areas of the country, the city has a population of 338,224 (2001) and covers an area of approximately 53 km2. Remains of ancient, medieval, revival and modern culture coexist within the city. Plovdiv is a diverse industrial and commercial hub Plovdiv-based companies are active in the food processing industry, followed by the canning industry, flourmills, dairy industry, meat processing industry, tobacco industry and brewing industry. The city also has a long standing manufacturing and chemical industry. The International Plovdiv Fair, which has existed for over 100 years and is the only one of its kind in Bulgaria, is world-famous. There are six district administrative areas in Plovdiv whose mayors are appointed following an approval by the Municipal Council. Plovdiv is part of a Large Urban Zone (LUZ) covering a population of 439,061.
