Sofia

Sofia is the capital of the Republic of Bulgaria and is located in the south west of the country. With a population of 1,091,772, Sofia is the largest city in Bulgaria. The territory of the includes the areas of 3 towns - Bankya, Novi Iskar, Buhovo, and 34 villages. It was founded seven thousand years ago and is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Sofia has one of the lowest unemployment levels in Bulgaria. Sofia has a well qualified labour force and attracts a significant number of inbound commuters. The city is also a favorable transport hub, possessing an international airport and located on the international motorway from Belgrade to Istanbul. The city is made up of 24 administrative and territorial districts and 34 mayor-led councils. Its management is a mixture of the self-government of the citizens and the operation of the state policy for the development of the capital. Sofia is part of a Large Urban Zone (LUZ) with a population of 1,263,807.
