Liège

Liège is located in the province of Liège in the region of Wallonia, and has a population of 185,000. It is the fifth largest city of Belgium. Liège is an important manufacturing centre in areas such as the automotive industry, metal products, electrical goods, machinery, food and tobacco. The city also specialises in service provision to industries and wholesale and retail trade services. The transport and logistics sector is a dynamic part of Liège’s economy, Liège being Europe’s third inland port. Biotechnology is also a growing area of expertise. The overall responsibility for running the city lies with the city council. The province of Liège also provides other public services, such as urban management and spatial planning. Liège is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) that covers an area of 1,055 km2 with a population of over 625,000 inhabitants.
