Charleroi

Charleroi is located in the province of Hainault in the region of Wallonia, and has a population of 201,000. It is the fourth largest city of Belgium. Previously reliant on heavy industry, (iron and steel production and large-scale machinery manufacturing), the economy of Charleroi is now dominated by the sector of biotechnology, trade, and services to businesses. In addition, Charleroi’s location at the crossroads of European trade makes it an attractive site for new businesses to locate. The overall responsibility for running the city is with the City Council, the mayor and the 49 elected members. The province of Hainaut also provides other important public services, such as urban management and spatial planning. Charleroi is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) with a population of over 386,000 inhabitants that covers an area of 615 km2.
