Gent

Gent is the capital of the Belgian province of East Flanders, part of the Flanders region. It has a population of 226,000. It is the second largest city of Flanders, and the third urban centre of Belgium. Gent was the first industrialised city of Flanders specialising in the textile industry. The city developed expertise in steel production, car assembly and electromechanical industries. The economy of Gent is now increasingly dominated by the service sector. The public sector is important to the city’s economy especially relating to public administration and health. The overall responsibility for running the city lies with Gent city council. The province of East Flanders also provides other public services, such as urban management and spatial planning. Gent is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 396,000 inhabitants that covers an area of 537 km2.
