Antwerpen

With a population of 449,000 Antwerp is the largest city in the Flanders region of Belgium. The economy of Antwerp is dominated by the petrochemical sector. Antwerp is well known for its port infrastructure (as the second largest port in Europe) and as a transport and distribution centre for the surrounding countries of the region. In addition, around 60% of the world’s production of rough and cut stones and industrial diamonds is traded in Antwerp. Antwerp is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 906,000 inhabitants that covers an area of 941 km2. The overall responsibility for running the city lies with the city council. Nine district councils support the work of the municipality, each one with their own district hall. In addition, the province of Antwerp also provides other public services, such as urban management and spatial planning. Antwerp is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 906,000 inhabitants that covers an area of 941 km2.
