Bruxelles/Brussel

The Brussels Capital Region is divided into nineteen different municipalities with a total population of 978,000. It is the administrative capital of Belgium with two language communities represented by the Flemish and French Communities. Brussels is also the seat of a large number of European institutions and other international organisations, as well as the seventh largest financial market in the world. The Brussels Capital Region has competencies in physical planning, environment, housing, public works and transport. The French and Flemish language communities are responsible for education, culture and social affairs in the city. The Brussels Capital Region is divided into 19 communes, each with their own elected members, and with responsibilities including parks, street cleaning and waste disposal. Brussels is part of a Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of 1.8 million inhabitants that covers an area of 1,614 km2.
